I was charged £30 for the bike from Gatwick to Alicante. I made a cycle bag. It was heavy and large. It did not fit into a pannier, so I planned to leave it in left-luggage, like at Istanbul. But the left luggage is only available at Alicante railway station, some 20 km away... Also, a bike in a bag is not allowable on the airport coaches from the car park. It would be helpful if there was a standardisation of rules and charges, and full details of bags available and left-luggage provision. I would always rather have my own bike than hire one (reasons:racks, lights, saddle, set up,etc), but I do not want to carry this wretched bag. Is there a lighter, packable one available? As for re-assembling the bike in Southampton airport, well, that's embarrassing as you hunt for tools, and you are always in someone's way. After the airport experience, the touring is easy!
